Abstract
This study focuses on Naoum Mokarzel “Warrior of Words: Naoum Mokarzel- Lebanese WWI Journalist”. It is based primarily on unpublished sources, including the Al-Hoda Journal Archives. The paper covers the years immediately preceding WWI where Naoum took a particularly long and winding road to defend the rights of the Lebanese people in America. With the outbreak of the WWI, it became progressively difficult for Mokarzel to pursue his goals “When the six Great Powers guaranteeing Lebanese polity were fighting one against another and seeking Ottoman’s friendship”. However, in 1916, rumors abounded about the massacre of the Maronites, and the rudeness of the Jamal Pasha policy activated N. Mokarzel to take all steps to prevent the annihilation of the people of Lebanon.
This paper focuses on the role of Al-Hoda- Naoum Mokarzel’s battlefied - in WWI, from which he started to attack the Turks in his editorials, and explores the ramifications of the reactions and actions of the “warrior of words”- until the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1918.

يركّز هذا المقال على نعوم مكرزل، ويستند بشكل أساسي على مصادر غير منشورة، من ضمنها أرشيف جريدة الهدى، شاملًا السنوات التي سبقت الحرب العالمية الأولى مباشرة ًحيث سلك نعوم مكرزل طريقًا طويلًا ومتعرّجًا للدفاع عن حقوق الشعب اللبناني في أمريكا. ومع اندلاع الحرب العالمية الأولى، أصبح من الصعب تدريجيًّا على نعوم مكرزل متابعة أهدافه. إلّا أنّه في عام 1916، كثرت الشائعات حول مذبحة الموارنة، ودفعت قسوة سياسة جمال باشا بنعوم مكرزل إلى اتّخاذ جميع الخطوات لمنع إبادة شعب لبنان.
جعل نعوم مكرزل من جريدة الهدى أرض معركته في الحرب العالمية الأولى، وانطلق منها لمهاجمة الأتراك في افتتاحيّاته مستكشفًا تداعيات ردود أفعال وتصرّفات "محارب في كلمات" - حتى سقوط الدولة العثمانيّة عام 1918.
