  • The Role of Culinary Culture in Building Lebanese National Identity Lebanese University- Center for Languages and Translation

This research analyzes the relation between culinary culture and national identity and suggests that food preparation and consumption along the use of specific ingredients allow the construction of nationhood through ordinary daily activities recognized as banal nationalism. This banal nationalism provides a common structure that is internalized by the people and perpetuate unconsciously and on a daily basis their sense of belonging to the nation. A quantitative survey with a representative sample of the Lebanese population showed that routine and repetition of daily tasks like national food consumption, recipes’ sharing and social gathering around food created a sense of belonging to the Lebanese nation regardless of sectarian belonging and age category. It showed that culinary culture as a bottom-up approach to nationhood has a unifying influence that can go beyond sectarianism. It has built a sense of common belonging without any resistance or stigmatization related to sectarian identities. This bottom-up approach can be used to construct and reproduce purposely a federating Lebanese national identity.
Keywords: Culinary culture, National identity, Sectarian identities, Banal nationalism, Sense of belonging.
